BHS talks automation at IndiaCorr Expo 2021
BHS celebrates 10 years in India
BHS Corrugated is a Germany-based pioneer in the corrugation industry for the past 60 years. The company was actually founded in 1717 and for the corrugated industry, it came into existence in 1960. BHS has manufacturing plants in Germany, China, Brazil, Italy, the US, Czech Republic, and Malaysia. Recently, BHS India completed its ten years in the country with a grand ceremony in Pune. At the IndiaCorr Expo, BHS said it wanted to share the ideas for technologies and innovations that have taken place in the last two years, with the larger industry.
While speaking with BHS India’s managing director Bijendra Sharma, we learned about its successes in the past decade with the installation of several corrugated lines. The company’s Ecoline and Steady corrugating lines have seen 17 installations as the corrugating industry has become increasingly organized and the quality levels for transport packaging have become more demanding. Single machine components and units such as slitter scorers, glue units, single-facer, double-facer, and splicers have also been supplied to plants that have these special requirements.
Being an industry leader in quality and productivity, BHS is by necessity an expert in automation. In this area, its latest innovations include warp control system (easy flat), temperature control system, and new double-facer. Sharma revealed that installations of these automation components would be taking place in India very soon and said that in the coming times, the company would launch BHS Robotics, BHS Intralogistics, and real-time corrugated roll to printed sheet printers in the country.
Speaking about the IndiaCorr exhibition and the footfall, Sharma said, “It is nice to see many people come to the event and meet with their customers and colleagues. It is the best platform if we take it from a business point of view. We can easily update our customers on whatever innovations are going on in the industry. We are happy to see the crowd and to see that people’s energy is back after a long gap.”
“And, if you ask me about the current situation of the corrugated industry, I would say that India has been witnessing a surge in its eCommerce sector over the last 5-6 years. The growth of the Indian corrugated box market will be augmented by the eCommerce industry, which has wider demand for safe and cushioned product packaging. The Indian eCommerce market is projected to grow to US$ 200 billion (approximately Rs 14,97,852 crore) by 2026 from US$ 38.5 billion (approximately Rs 2,88,366 crore) in 2017.”
Talking about the scope of the corrugation industry, he said, “The future of the corrugation market would be looking for adopting evolving technologies, corrugated boxes for display, promotional packs, beds, and dispensers becoming popular, growing demand for efficient corrugators, and also alliances and mergers with manufacturers.”
Sharma concluded by highlighting the company’s achievements and its customer’s experience during the pandemic, “BHS India gave continuous service support to customers even during peak lockdowns. New corrugation line installations and trial runs were done successfully in India and adjoining countries during the pandemic. Even in these difficult times, the BHS India Team size has been increased with sales, service, project engineers, process trainers, software engineers, spare parts coordinator to support our customers better.”
Packaging South Asia — resilient, growing and impactful — daily, monthly — always responsive
The 18-year-old multi-channel B2B in print and digital platform matches the industry’s high growth trajectory. The Indian, South Asian, Southeast Asian, and Middle East packaging industries are increasing capacity and diversification, with high technology and automation in new projects.
We are mid-way through 2024, and India’s real GDP growth for FY 24-25 will exceed 6.3%. The packaging industry growth will match the GDP growth in volume terms and likely surpass it by at least 2.5% according to our research company www.ippstar.org .
The capacity for flexible film manufacturing in India has increased significantly over the past four years. We expect another 20% capacity addition in 2024 and 2025. Capacities in monocartons, corrugation, aseptic liquid packaging, and labels are growing similarly. As the consumption story returns, we expect demand to return and exceed the growth trajectory of previous years. The numbers are positive for most of the economies in the region – and as shown by our analytics, our platform increasingly reaches and influences these.
For responsible and sustainable packaging, with its attendant regulations and compliances, there is significant headroom to grow in India and the region. Our impactful coverage includes the entire packaging supply chain – from concept to shelf, to waste collection, sorting, and recycling. India is where the leading suppliers to the packaging industry are shifting their manufacturing – an opportunity with stable supply chains and low-cost production efficiencies.
We target brand owners, product managers, raw material suppliers, packaging designers and converters, co-packers, and recyclers. If you want to reach them, your agility and innovation shown on the industry-leading platform can do some of the heavy lifting.
